Otokoyama Honten Brewery Company (Kesennuma)
Miyagi
Otokoyama Honten, founded in 1912, has been brewing sake in Kesennuma, a prominent port town in Japan, for over 100 years. Although our main building, a national Tangible Cultural Property built in 1932, was destroyed by the 2011 tsunami, our sake brewery narrowly escaped damage. We resumed sake production the day after the earthquake using the surviving moromi (fermenting mash). Encouraged by local citizens and people nationwide, we are determined to continue our sake production as part of the recovery effort. This experience has reinforced the importance of our bonds with the region, community, and sake enthusiasts. Today, we remain dedicated to brewing sake that utilizes local resources, complements local cuisine, and is cherished both locally and beyond.
