Matsuya Brewery Company

Gunma

Founded as a rice wholesaler in Toyama Prefecture during the Edo period, this brewery began producing sake in the late Meiji era. Due to its proximity to the Tokyo market and favorable natural environment, the brewery relocated to Fujioka City in 1951 (Showa 26). Fujioka is blessed with abundant spring water from the Kannagawa and Ayukawa rivers, which originate from the Mikabo mountain range, making it an ideal location for sake brewing. After the retirement of the Nanbu Toji master brewer in 1995 (Heisei 7), the company president took over as the master brewer, maintaining a commitment to traditional, small-batch, hand-crafted sake production unique to their small-scale brewery. Their sake lineup includes the exclusive “Ruka” for select retailers and locally distributed brands such as “Tosen,” “Hiraijo,” and “Miyakohatsuyuki,” known for their vibrant and crisp flavor profiles, which have earned a loyal fan base.
