Nakagawa Brewery Company(Niigata)
Niigata
Nakagawa Brewery was established in 1888 in the town of Wakino, Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture — one of Japan's most celebrated sake-producing regions. The brewery's origins trace back to the Nakagawa family, who had long operated a money exchange business. When a nearby sake brewery was destroyed in a great fire, the family acquired its brewing license and began crafting sake of their own.
From the very beginning, Nakagawa has prioritized flavor over production efficiency, a philosophy that continues to guide the brewery today. The sake is made with locally grown Niigata rice, milled in-house, and brewed with soft underground water that flows from the nearby Nishiyama mountain range — ideal conditions for producing the clean, refined style that Niigata sake is known for.
The brewery's flagship brand, Koshi no Hakugan, takes its name from the white wild geese that migrate to the area each year. The sake is characterized by a crisp, elegant profile with a touch more body and depth than the typical Niigata dry style. Its quality has been recognized nationally, with the Kuromatsu label winning the highest gold award at the Japan Warm Sake Contest.
Remarkably, the vast majority of Nakagawa's sake is consumed within Niigata Prefecture, making it a rare find outside the region. Among sake lovers, this scarcity only adds to its appeal. Nakagawa Sake Brewery is, in every sense, a hidden gem — a brewer's brewer, quietly producing some of Niigata's finest sake for those fortunate enough to discover it.
