Aoi Brewery Company

Aoi Brewery Company

Niigata

The origins of this brewery are said to date back to the Ansei era of the Edo period (1854–1860), giving it a history of more than 160 years. Its brick-built brewery, constructed in the Taisho era, has long stood in Nagaoka as a place of sake production and is now designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. Formerly known as Takahashi Shuzo, the brewery built its reputation around its flagship label Choryo, named after Nagaoka itself, and has long brewed sake deeply rooted in the local community. From 2024 onward, a new team has taken up this legacy, carrying its history forward into a new chapter. Looking beyond Nagaoka to the rest of Japan and the wider world, the brewery seeks to create sake that resonates with people’s hearts. By honoring the traditions of Japanese sake culture while adding perspectives suited to the present day, it aims to reimagine what a historic brewery can be. Through sake brewing, and together with the local community, the brewery aspires to make this place even more vibrant—embracing the past while shaping something new.
