Okamura Brewery Company

Hyogo

Okamura Brewery is a historic sake brewery in Sanda City, Hyogo Prefecture, with over 130 years of sake-making tradition since its founding in 1889. It is the only brewery in Sanda, now led by the sixth-generation owner who also serves as the brewmaster. With a deep commitment to local production, the brewery cultivates its sake rice—such as Gohyakumangoku and ancient red rice—on a 3,000-tsubo (approx. 1 hectare) rice field, using the harvested grains to brew its sake. Okamura Brewery is dedicated to the full cycle of sake making, from rice cultivation to brewing and direct sales, embracing a model known as “sixth-sector industrialization.” Their sake, crafted with locally grown rice and pure water from the region, is rich in umami and depth, pairing beautifully with Japanese cuisine. In 2024, traditional Japanese sake brewing was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the brewery continues to honor and carry forward that legacy. Each bottle reflects the blessings of Sanda’s natural environment and the heartfelt craftsmanship of a small but passionate local brewery. It’s a sake worth experiencing.
